5 Tips for Managing Chafing While Hiking

Posted by Jack Miller on 27th May 2020

While out hiking or participating in other outdoor activities, especially in warm weather, chafing is common. It’s a problem that many people experience but few talk about. Chafing is uncomfortable, irritating and sometimes painful, and can lead to serious complications if left untreated. However, there are things you can do to manage chafing.

Here are some of our top recommendations for preventing chafing during a hike.

Avoid lubricating skin treatments

Formulated anti-chafe treatments come in a wide variety of applications, from balms to gels and creams. Anti-chafe skin treatments are designed to lubricate areas susceptible to friction and rubbing, such as between the thighs. But there’s a problem. Anti-chafe creams and treatments don’t work as well as they should. As your thighs rub together while you walk, the creams rub off too quickly and your skin is gradually stripped away with each step. Only physical barriers, such as anti-chafing thigh bands, will work to prevent this breakdown of skin.

Wear anti-chafing thigh guards

Some companies design shorts or bands specifically made to prevent chafing. No More Chafe makes anti-chafing thigh guards, which come in a range of sizes, feature a protective flap to protect the inside of the thighs. An innovative, patented compensation system and gripping silicone elastic grippers ensure a full range of movement, during all activities. Silicone grippers are long-lasting and thigh guards should be cleaned and washed after each use, and can be reliably worn for many years.

Ensure your clothing is properly fitted

Clothing that fits poorly or is too tight can dig into your skin and encourage a chafing rash. Baggy shirts, pants or shorts made of poor-quality material can rub away at your skin. That’s why it’s important to only wear clothes that fit correctly and aren’t too loose or too tight.

If you’re interested in anti-chafing thigh bands, you’ll want to make sure you have a perfect fit. You should measure your thighs accurately, so you’ll know which size to choose. Quality thigh guards are fitted with upward-rising grippers to ensure a superior grip.  They also come in two different lengths, so they can fit people of all sizes, people who are short, people who are tall, they are tailor made for your comfort.

Avoid tags

Even if your clothes fit properly, loose parts such as tags and harsh seamlines can cause chafing and irritation. Good quality anti-chafe thigh guards are tagless and free from harsh seams to ensure the most comfortable hiking experience.

Stay hydrated

Dry and dehydrated skin is one of the most common causes of chafing and skin irritation. The more dehydrated you are, the higher the salt concentration levels in your sweat become. Salt is irritating to the skin, which can lead to severe friction and chafing.

Always remember to bring a water bottle with you when out on hiking trips, and regularly stop for a break to cool down. In combination with proper gear and protective guards, staying hydrated should make your chafing problems a thing of the past.
