Top 5 Chafing Myths Debunked

Posted by Jack Miller on 8th Oct 2021

Thigh chafing is often a painful and distracting experience. From the discomfort to the itching and soreness, it can be a real struggle to get through the day when your thighs are chafed. Despite this, there are many thigh chafing myths and rumours going around like the only way to stop thigh chafing is with talcum powder or that it doesn’t impact people with a slim physique. Read on to learn about the top 5 chafing myths and misconceptions that you really shouldn’t be believing.

Thigh chafing only happens to people with larger bodies

We’re here to tell you that anyone can develop thigh chafing, regardless of their body shape and size. All you need is a stimulus like sweating excessively or clothes that don’t allow air to pass through. Anything that causes friction or rubs against your skin can cause chafing legs. In other words, don’t think you’re safe from thigh chafing if you’ve got a smaller body shape.

Thigh chafing can be avoided with talcum powder

Another thigh chafing myth that many people believe is regarding talcum powder. While talcum powder does dry up moisture, you shouldn’t be placing any talcum powder around the groin area as it may cause health problems.

Thigh chafing increases how much you sweat

If your thigh chafing is a result of dry skin, then your body will respond by producing moisture. This moisture can be mistaken for sweat, but it certainly isn’t. While it may not increase how much you sweat, thigh chafing can cause your skin to darken in patches.

Thigh chafing causes spots and pimples

While thigh chafing doesn’t make you sweat more, there are myths floating about that say thigh chafing can cause pimples. We’re here to tell you this is partially true and partially false. Thigh chafing does not cause pimples or spots but could cause the build-up of bacteria and abscesses (pus-filled pimples). If you notice the appearance or growth of abscesses, we recommend that you visit your GP for advice and support on how to deal with them.

Chafing only happens to your thighs

We always hear the phrase ‘thigh chafing’ and therefore assume that chafing only happens to the thighs. We don’t want to be the bearers of bad news, but this is not true. Other parts of the are also prone to chafing especially women’s genitourinary parts like the vulva. The reason? It’s an area where you sweat more and as a result experience more friction. We’re here to tell you that if you’re chafing in other areas of your body, chances are you’re not alone and it’s perfectly normal.
