What to do if you Experience Chafing at Work

Posted by Jack Miller on 24th Jun 2020

Work can be difficult, stressful, and draining. The last thing you need is to be completely distracted by painful chafing, particularly if your shift isn't even close to being over. You will be glad to hear that you're not alone, chafing at work is very common. You will be even more relieved to know that you don't have to suffer because chafing at work can be easily treated and prevented.

1. Use items you have at work

If you're experiencing chafing at work, your top priority will be to ease your discomfort as soon as possible. This will be easier if you're able to nip out to the shops, or pop home for some supplies. However, you may have items that you can use in your handbag, gym bag, or office. If you happen to have some rub-on deodorant or Vaseline handy, apply this to the affected area to create a temporary relief on your skin. Alternatively, your workplace should have a first-aid kit containing some sort of burn cream or generic cream to soothe all kinds of skin irritation. Sneak into the bathroom and apply a dab to your skin as a chafing remedy. Finally, if you brought your gym bag with you, it may contain gym shorts or leggings. If possible, slip these on beneath your clothing to help prevent skin-on-skin contact and further discomfort.

2. Use your lunch break to obtain chafing cures

If you don't have the necessary items at work, you will need to go home or to the nearest shop to stock up. If possible avoid walking around and try to remain seated until you can treat the chafing, to avoid further irritation. Once lunch rolls around, visit your home or the shops and look for any of the items mentioned above. Alternatives include aloe vera gel, coconut oil, and moisturiser. Of course, if you're able to go home, you could just get changed, but this may prompt some unwelcome questions from your coworkers.

3. Wash & Moisturise

Once you've made it through the day, you can give the irritated skin some further care and attention to help it heal. Gently wash the affected area with some warm water, before changing into something loose and comfortable that will let the skin breathe without causing further irritation. If you have any open cuts or sores, you should wait for them to heal before applying any lotions. If you don't have any cuts or sores, you can use any of the treatments mentioned in step 1 and step 2, and reapply once the first application has soaked into your skin.

4. Total Prevention is the Key

After experiencing chafing at work once, you'll be keen to ensure that it doesn't happen again. What is most important is to completely prevent chafing. The only solution available, that is tailor made to completely stop chafe are anti-chafing thigh bands, which stop the skin on your thighs from rubbing together.
